I got to know about IAESTE Korea via my university’s website. There were often announcement regarding the IAESTE internship abroad and they caught my attention. After carefully checking the information, I figured out this would be a lifetime experience for me, so I decided to send my application to IAESTE Korea.

The process from the application to the acceptance by the employer was quite tremendous. First I needed to prepare a handful of documents. Then I chose a potential employer from a list of companies. This was quite a difficult task because I should have only one chance to pick the right company, and it would greatly influence my experience afterwards. When my application had passed the IAESTE screening and was well received by the employer, I was interviewed for 2 hours. The interview was very important because it decided whether I would be accepted or not. After that, the result came out pretty quick.

Switzerland is the first country I have ever been outside of Asia. It is actually quite an interesting country. I remember one of the most interesting encounter I had was when I visited my friend in Bern. It was at midnight, and I was getting lost in the middle of a rural area. Out of nowhere I saw a man approach me. I took all my courage to ask him direction. After a few minutes of confusing, he offered to drive me to my friend’s address. I was not confidence to join him, but I had to other options anyway. I got in his car, after sending my friend a message with his car’s plate number. After 10 minutes of driving, I arrived at my friend’s place, safe and sound. That’s the first time I experienced how nice and friendly Swiss people truly are.

Regarding working style, the difference I noticed in the way work is conducted in Switzerland compared to my home country is that no matter how much work there is, people rarely work overtime. They work from 9am to 6pm, and then go home. Whatever work is not done yet, they leave it till the next days, without any problem. In my home country, employees are often forced to work overtime, without any extra benefit or support.

Amongst all the culture shocks, the most difficult thing to get used to was the stores’ closing time. Most of them close at 8pm on weekdays and even on Sunday. I used to do all my shopping on weekends when my time is most flexible. In Switzerland, going shopping after a workday is a quite tired task.

The last thing I want to say is that, IAESTE means a lot to me. IAESTE offered me a chance to explore the world in a way I could not possibly imagine before. The valuable experience I had is in both career profession and personal adventure. It helps me foster my dream. Although the traineeship is over, what it brought to me will follow me wherever I go in the future. So to all the future applicants, please stop hesitating and start applying for an IAESTE traineeship right now! I guarantee you that it will change your life forever.
