THE NEW AND NICE
‘Internship in India for two months during summer’
IN INDIA
LIFE
Since I arrived Manipal, I have stayed in Valley flat 203 which had has 3 rooms, 2 bathrooms with no kitchen, cooker (which is the worst thing because we couldn’t cook so always should go out to eat) and laundry machine. It was really a BASIC accommodation. The flat was not that good but it was great staying with other interns from all over the world. I have stayed there with five, three from Serbia, one from Swiss and one from Slovenia who left India before me. Since we had a big living room, we sometimes had tea time or invited other interns to our flat or were invited by others to play some games and have mini cinema time, means hanging out with altogether. Having decent time with others from all over the world was definitely the best thing during this internship. There were so many parties and dinner time and whoever suggested a certain event always asked others to feel free to join them so all interns became friends easily in a good way. It was really great and an easy way to know each other. Also whenever I have free time on weekends and after work, I tried to delete one of my ‘want (could be ‘must’) to do list’, for instance, going to shopping in Udupi which was a bigger city had open markets and many shops, just looking around and finding a new place in my city and doing some sports sometimes as well. Whenever we did some sports, we were all sweating so much as it was crazily hot. The weather of India in July and August could be said in this way, it was boiling hot or unexpected rains. Because of the literally unexpected rains, we always have carried our own umbrella in any situation and we could use it to protect ourselves from being burned. In terms of Indian food, it was really nice for me. I enjoyed various Indian gravy, curry, masala with naan or parotha, which is a kind of naan, and etc.
WORK
Before reaching there, I received some papers to understand my project topic, a kind of preview. On the first meeting with my professor, who was really nice to me, he explained the details of the topic that I should do during my internship and I found I would write about 5 papers for five steps. We set the schedules for each step as below and start our work.
Five steps
1. Literature review in 9 papers to get clearly what we have to do 2. 1) Listing the contents for University Native app 2) Grouping and categorization; from students’ perspective for more than two models 3. Survey for University Mobile App users 4. Survey for different universities students, internationally 5. Final report which should be followed the form of international journal.
For every step, he explained what I have to do and I studied, searched and analyzed it.
Two months was not enough to analyze perfectly but I did all papers and those works will be developed by him afterwards to be published. In terms of work place, I have been worked in a computer lab for first two weeks and in the professor’s cabin afterwards. My fixed work time was from 10:00 to 13:00 in the cabin and in the afternoon, I had been able to work at anywhere, library and the IAESTE office etc.
Because the work time was flexible, I could set my perfect office time. Generally I had been working for 6 hours a day; 1 hour at my flat before reporting to work, 3 hours in the cabin and 2 hours in the cabin or library.
Additionally many events like international semester and teachers’ day were held by my department, Department of Commerce so I took participated in some events. For example, I had a short speech for international inauguration day about my feeling in India and other experiences in other countries. The events were small compared to Korea’s, but they were great and quite well-prepared events and I was really impressed since they had been organizing various events to get international students and keep the contacts. One of my goals for this internship was improving my English skill while working with foreigners and writing papers directly in English; I think I could achieve that through these nine weeks of internship and make my paper in a new field as well.
TRIP
Actually, the best thing of this internship was that I could go trips with many friends, namely interns from all over the world. Some friends were really good at organizing a trip for a big group and sometimes it was over 20 people. I had three big trips, three small trips and lots of small and big events; some were organized by interns and others were organized by IAESTE LC Manipal students. Although internsorganized trips were organized by ourselves, Indian members of IAESTE LC group sometimes helped us for some parts of preparing like booking a boat, train or bus. The three big places were Allepey, Hampi and Mysore. It’s really hard to choose just one thing for each trip but I would try to summarize that as following; in Allepey, the first reason we visited the city was ‘houseboat’ which was like a small private cruise made with coconut or banana leaves and we stayed in the boat for one night. Allepey beach was fantastic as well. Houseboat night with friends was truly precious because it is not easy, actually almost impossible in Korea. A week after the houseboat trip, I found there were much more beautiful places than I expected and one of those was Mysore palace in Mysore. The greatness can’t be explained with any words and the moment in the palace at night was truly amazing. In terms of activity, the best one is a bike tour in Hampi which has many temples, hills and historical sites. One of the hills was worthy climbing although we were so tired after a long bus ride for about 10 hours, and the island was really peaceful and terrific.
Every trip was amazing so can’t be forgot forever and I am sure it would be much better because I was with many friends who can share the perfect time.
EVENT
Not just for long trips, I could have a decent time with many interns and Indian students of LC community while enjoying various events that were organized by LC community such as International evening, Ball and Karaoke night. In the International evening, lots of interns were participated in performances and I was in fashion show so I could tried one of Indian traditional clothes and had a runway at that night. As an Asian, the Ball was really a new thing because generally, we don’t have that kind of events. It was new and nice time with my partner, dancing and dancing. I fully enjoyed the time although most interns from Europe, Africa and America etc. could do some good dance like Waltz but I couldn’t. Just enjoyed it and was really happy.
MY AIMS OF THIS INTERNSHIP
Aims that had been expected
1. Improve my English skill > Since this internship was my first experience, working and living in English only, it was really helpful to improve my English speaking. I also found that all interns had different accent and different level but they didn’t care about that. They just tried to understand each other even in difficult situation and I was getting used to it slowly. If you want to know it technically, I thought that I could get two grades higher in English speaking test compared to before.
2. Get one more work experience in research and analysis field > After my first internship in one consulting firm in Korea, I wanted to have more experiences in that field. As it is said, IAESTE is specialized for engineering part but I could find one job offer related to research and analysis. Of course, the project was new for me, but I could finish it with some effort.
The unexpected gain
3. Friends from all over the world > Unexpectedly but fortunately, I could meet tons of foreign students from all over the world because Manipal University have offered various internship in different field. In Manipal, there were about 50 interns; some were from Germany, Poland, Tunisia, Kenya, Nigeria, California, Spain, Serbia, Bangladesh, and Columbia and so on. I can’t arrange all of those. I was so lucky knowing and meeting so many friends in India. Because India is in Asia, the majority of interns were from other continents like Europe and Africa so I was an only Asian girl. It was an unexpected situation but really great
